Colin Kaepernick To Release Memoir

Colin Kaepernick is ready to share his story.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback announced on Thursday (February 13) that he will be releasing a memoir through his own publishing house, Kaepernick Publishing, later this year.

Kap's book, which is described as "part political awakening and part memoir," will share the life experiences that led him to risk his NFL career and begin silently protesting during the 2016 NFL preseason by kneeling during the National Anthem.

"My protest was the culmination of years of thought and experiences, of learning and unlearning. I want to tell the story of my evolution, and the events that led me to protest systemic oppression, in hopes that it will inspire others to rise in action," the athlete turned political activist said in a statement.

In addition to the memoir, Kaepernick Publishing struck a multi-project deal with Audible that will include the exclusive rights to release the audio version of his forthcoming memoir and to create audio projects that will amplify the voices of “notable authors, creators and other influential figures," The Hollywood Reporter reports.

"I am excited that through this groundbreaking partnership between Kaepernick Publishing and Audible, we can elevate black and brown voices who can empower future generations," Kap said of the partnership.

Kaepernick hasn't played in the NFL since the 2016 season — the same season he began his National Anthem protests to bring awareness to police brutality, and a number of social injustices faced by black Americans. Less than a year after his first silent protest, the quarterback, who led the 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2013, became a free agent with no team offering him a contract for the 2017 season. Kap then filed a grievance against the league, claiming team owners colluded to keep him from playing because of his refusal to stand during the National Anthem. After a two-year battle, he settled his case against the league last year.
