Miami-Dade holds 'Opening of Schools' Gathering

(Miami, Fla) - Miami Dade County public school officials held an 'Opening of Schools' gathering today ahead of next week's first day of school.

Superintendent Dr. Jose Dotres set the course for the nation's third largest school district.

This year's Opening of Schools event was an opportunity for "school leaders to come together to raise the bar for educational excellence, making @MDCPS the best choice for a child's educational journey. "

Dotres spent three decades as a teacher, administrator and assistant superintendent before becoming the top administrator.

He also applauded what he called the largest and best trained school police force in the nation and pointed to the 92% district graduation rate, up from 89%.

School starts next Thursday, August 17th in Miami Dade and the following Monday in Broward.
