Scientists are hopeful a new experimental "brain zapping" helmet can help people overcome their addictions to drugs or alcohol.

Patients wear a special $1 million helmet and goggles while being shown images of what they're struggling with.

The helmet then pulses parts of the brain with ultrasound waves until the cravings are gone.

So far, a reported three-quarters of the trial participates have remained substance-free for months.

Neuroscientists say, "The hope is that by taking away cravings—one of the biggest distractions in recovery—people will have an easier time focusing on learning to manage the daily stressors of life that often lead to continued addiction."

The equipment has also shown some promise with treating symptoms of depression.
