OKALOOSA COUNTY, FL -- A history-making, 75-year-old ocean liner is about to start its last voyage.
The "S.S. United States" is due to be towed as soon as Wednesday from Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama. It's set to become an artificial reef near the Florida Gulf Coast.
Alex Fogg with Okaloosa County government says blustery weather kept them from launching Monday and Tuesday.
The county paid one million dollars to buy the S.S. United States. Repair crews will strip out any hazardous materials before the ship is sent to the bottom to serve as an artificial reef. The location will likely be about 20 miles offshore of the county.
The county will also build a museum on land to honor the steamship.
